An age-friendly community supports active, healthy and engaged living for people through all life stages and abilities, and fosters civic, economic, and social participation throughout the life course. The World Health Organization (WHO) created the Age-Friendly Communities Initiative to provide an established process for identifying the gaps in each community and a means of eliminating those gaps. According to the WHO, an Age-Friendly Community incorporates eight essential elements: Housing is affordable, appropriately located, well built, well designed and secure. Public transportation is accessible and affordable. Outdoor spaces and public buildings are pleasant, clean, secure and physically accessible. Community support and health services are customized and tailored to all persons’ needs. All communication and information is easily and readily available. Opportunities for employment and volunteerism cater to any person’s interests and abilities. People of all ages are treated with respect and are included in civic life. Opportunities are available for social participation in leisure, social, cultural and spiritual activities with people of all ages and cultures. Age-Friendly Sarnia has developed our own Community Action Plan to recommend priority action items. A Steering Committee and seven sub-committees consisting of 73 community members have been formed to implement the Action Plan.
Age-Friendly Sarnia continues to seek input and participation from members of the community. We have several Events, Committees, and Projects. If you or someone you know would like to get involved with Age-Friendly Sarnia or would like to receive more information, contact the Coordinator using the information on this page or the Age-Friendly Sarnia website.
