Volunteering in Sarnia-Lambton

VOLUNTEERING: A Great Way To Grow

Storytelling Volunteer

Our seniors have life experiences and stories in their memory bank that are worth preserving for generations to come.  VON will provide storytelling volunteers with a set of questions.  They meet with a client once a week for eight to ten weeks asking questions and recording the answers.  They will then compile the questions and answers into a binder to present to the client.  Resources and training are provided.

Member of Foundation Board of Directors

Members of the Foundation Board provide strategic leadership to VON by committing to excellence in advocacy and supporting VON to achieve its important vision and mission.  Board members oversee the VON Foundation, participate in fund-raising events and work to increase the visibility and knowledge of VON in the community.

Group Visiting Leader

You can live in a building with lots of other people around and still be very lonely and isolated.  A team of two group visiting leaders go into a building where a lot of seniors live and lead scheduled times of guided discussion.  The aim is to assist them in getting to know one another and build friendships with those around them.

Volunteer Visitor

Visit a lonely and isolated senior on a weekly basis.  You can take them out or stay in and visit.  Our clients have lived productive lives but now find themselves alone and staring at the walls, unable to get out without a friend.  They have much to offer someone who takes time to listen!

Crisis Responders Needed

Victim Services of Sarnia Lambton is a non-profit organization that provides immediate emotional and practical support to victims of crime or tragic circumstance. Crisis Responders are needed for weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. Training is provided. www.victimservices.on.ca or 519-344-8861 ext#5238

PEER Engagement

WE NEED YOU!!!

Our services allow for seniors to remain living at home, but our PEER ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM is designed to get them out of the house!

We are looking for a team of Volunteers to co-lead this new program that will focus on engaging seniors who want to connect with one another to share common experiences within the community and enjoy meaningful and social volunteer opportunities together.

If you are energetic, outgoing, committed, enthusiastic, and looking for a volunteer opportunity that will enrich the lives of seniors, then we want to hear from you!

Are you someone who would benefit from more social interaction? Then this is how you can be involved.  Please contact our Peer Engagement Lead, Dena:

In-School Mentor

The In-School Mentoring program is a fun- based Mentoring Program that matches a caring adult volunteer on a one to one basis with a child at a local elementary school. For one hour a week mentors with their mentees engage in fun activities such as board games, crafts or just hanging out on the playground. All activities take place on school grounds during school hours. The children in the program benefit from the extra attention and friendship that an adult mentor can provide.

Couple Mentoring

The Couples Mentoring program matches a married or common-law couple aged 21 and over who would like to share the joys and rewards of befriending a child together. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentors and mentees that is built on trust and common interests and is supported by an experienced Caseworker. Couples generally spend about 80% of their time together with the Little Brother allowing some one to one time with child.
