Volunteering in Sarnia-Lambton

VOLUNTEERING: A Great Way To Grow

Volunteer Transportation

Transport clients to medical appointments, social engagements, and to do shopping/errands.  A mileage reimbursement is offered.

REWARDS!

As a volunteer in this program you will be providing a needed service and assistance to clients that otherwise would not likely get out. You will have conversation and a feeling of giving back.

Volunteers use their personal vehicle to transport clients, and are reimbursed:  mileage is calculated as a return trip from the client’s home to their destination and back.

Requirements:

Meals on Wheels

This program is an Essential Service and is actively delivering both hot and cold meals throughout Lambton County.

Deliver meals and spend a few minutes providing a safety check to clients in the Meals on Wheels program.

Hot Meals:  delivered throughout the county. Meals consist of a soup, entrée and dessert, and are delivered 2 to 3 times per week by volunteers. Each town has different pick-up locations and procedures to follow. If you are volunteering for this program you will job shadow with an experienced volunteer. Volunteers are encouraged to visit for a few minutes as a safety check and to inform the Program Coordinator of any health status changes. There is a honorarium for performing this service using your vehicle.

Frozen Meal Program: Meals are ordered and delivered every 2 weeks throughout Lambton County.  Orders may consist of soups, entrées, and desserts.   There are currently four delivery routes for the Frozen Meal Program throughout the county.  Volunteers are able to use one of the minivans from Lambton Elderly Outreach to deliver these meals.  Meals are prepared by Apetito and are picked up by volunteers to deliver from the office. Thermal bags are used to keep the meals cold during the delivery.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit for a few minutes from the client’s door to provide a safety check and note any health status changes.

Friendly Visiting

Pay a friendly visit to a client in his or her home, or by phone. This service is mainly geared to isolated clients.

REWARDS!

Make new friends!

Be there to talk, listen, participate in activities, and provide companionship to someone in your community who may not be able to get out to socialize.

Volunteers provide friendly visits to seniors or disabled adults who may be isolated and/or who are lonely.  Volunteers are matched based on interest, availability and location.

The volunteer and client will set up their own schedule for visit days and times. The volunteer is required to report any client concerns to the program coordinator.

Diners Club (60+ Luncheon)

Attend one of our Diners Club luncheons to help serve our clients a nutritious meal.

Our Diners Clubs are offered in Corunna and looking to expand.

Offers a hot meal at a minimal cost, and an opportunity for socializing with others.  A guest speaker or entertainer follows the meal.

Volunteers assist with setting up tables, serving the meal, and clean up. They are encouraged to join the clients at lunch (complimentary).

Forever Fit: Exercise Classes for older adults

Instruct a fitness class for older adults.  We will send you to training at the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging in London where you will learn Senior Fitness instruction.

Lambton Elderly Outreach offers a one hour low impact exercise class for those 60+ based on the design by the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA)

All volunteers go through a training program through a certified trainer from the CCAA.

Classes are offered in various towns throughout Lambton County based on instructor availability.  Classes run from one to three times per week.  The volunteer coordinator assists with the administration of the program, including obtaining space for the program to be held, and ensuring equipment is kept up to date.

Telephone Support Volunteer

Volunteers are needed to ensure that seniors continue to receive their check-in calls through the Tel-Check program.

Volunteers are also needed to ensure that when people reach out to the Distress Line, their call will be answered.

For over 40 years volunteers have been providing telephone support to isolated seniors and individuals struggling with day to day life challenges in Sarnia Lambton.
